Haiti geography 

Overview

Haiti is a country in the Caribbean sea and is one of two countries on the island of Hispaniola. It has a land border with the Dominican republic. The second closest country to Haiti is Cuba, being 50 miles away. Haiti's capital is Port au Prince in the south west region of Haiti. Haiti is mostly 1600 feet in elevation. In addition Haiti has more land not connected to the country. One of the islands is Gonâve island and the other island is Tortue island. The climate in Haiti does not differ from place to place. In Haiti it is mostly hot and humid. The only place where the weather changes is on the really tall mountains where you can get snow. In the winter the peaks can get frost on them. The national animal of Haiti is the  Hispaniolan Trogon. The Hispaniolan Trogon has very vibrant colors and the song that the birds sing is slow but can be herald in a wide radius. Some parts of Haiti can get less than 28 inches of rain each year. Haiti's population is almost all people whose ancestors were enslaved. Haiti’s achieved independence from France in 1804 with the Haitian revolution. In the south west of Haiti is the Massif de la Selle, the largest mountains in all of Haiti and keep the country cool. It is very important in Haitian culture. In the northern part of Haiti is the Massif du Nord which is the northern massif. The climate there is very dry and desert-like. The Pic Macaya National park is the largest national park in Haiti. It leads into the Massif de la Hotte. That is the most extensive mountain range in Haiti. The Massif de la Hotte is very important for finding new wildlife. The different features of Haiti have a lot of different parts to them. The features are important to the people of Haiti because the people can get natural resources.
